Hiring a Tree Specialist? Know the Signs of a True Professional

Unfortunately in Australia the tree industry isn’t regulated like many other trades — which means anyone can advertise as a “tree expert,” even with no formal training.

Here are some warning signs that may indicate you're not dealing with a qualified or reputable operator:

Doesn’t own or maintain their own equipment – Professional contractors invest in and properly maintain their own tools and machinery. Relying solely on borrowed or rented gear can be a sign of inexperience or lack of commitment to the trade.

No formal arboriculture qualifications – A minimum AQF Level 3 in Arboriculture is essential for anyone performing tree work safely and competently. If they don’t hold this, they’re not a qualified arborist. For assessments, reports or consultancy, AQF Level 5 indicates advanced expertise.

Cannot provide valid insurance documentation – Public liability and workers compensation insurance are non-negotiable in this high-risk industry. A reputable operator will gladly provide proof of cover upon request.

Only promotes through social media – While social media is useful for reaching customers, professionals will also have a registered ABN, a website, and a consistent track record. A lack of professional presence beyond social media may suggest a lack of accountability.

Pushes for complete tree removal as the default option – While removals are sometimes necessary, this can be a red flag. Upselling unnecessary removals is common among unqualified operators. A true professional will assess the project and communicate a number of options that align with your goals while preserving the tree and surrounding environment where possible.

Avoids or deflects when asked for credentials or references – Qualified arborists will be transparent and happy to share evidence of their training, insurance, and previous work. Evasion or vague answers are a sign to walk away.
